Bateleur Coaching & Consulting

Our story

Leadership Rooted in Purpose

“Because strategy without execution is just wishful thinking.”

Bateleur Coaching & Consulting (Pty) Ltd is a premier leadership development and strategy execution firm, founded on a single conviction: that authentic leadership transforms not just businesses — but lives. We were founded in the recognition that the most pressing challenge facing African organisations is not a shortage of vision or strategic ambition. It is the gap between what organisations plan and what they actually deliver. Seventy percent of strategies fail during execution — costing an estimated $2.1 trillion globally each year. Bateleur was built to solve exactly this problem — not from the outside, with advice and slide decks, but from the inside, with embedded expertise, proven methodologies, and a coaching philosophy rooted in African excellence and global rigour. We are not an advisory firm that delivers reports and leaves. We stay embedded until outcomes are achieved.

Philosophy

The founding conviction

"African organizations don't need Western frameworks parachuted in. They need partners who understand the terrain, speak the language of the continent, and stay until the work is done."

This philosophy underpins every Bateleur engagement — from the way we structure our guarantee, to the way our methodology was built to reflect the realities of executing strategy in African markets, not replicate models designed for different contexts.

Why Bateleur Exists

Twenty-five years is long enough to see the same pattern repeat across different boardrooms, different sectors, and different countries: talented leaders, real ambition, and strategies that quietly stall somewhere between approval and implementation. Nyasha spent much of that career inside financial services and organisational transformation work, in the room when plans were signed off — and often still in the room, or called back into it, when those same plans failed to materialise months later. What became clear over time wasn't a shortage of good strategy. African organisations are not short on ambition or analytical rigour. What was missing, again and again, was someone senior enough to stay embedded through the unglamorous middle of execution — after the launch event, after the initial enthusiasm, when a strategy either becomes daily operating discipline or quietly reverts to business as usual. Consultancies were leaving reports. Coaches were working on individuals in isolation from the systems around them. Nobody was staying in the business long enough, or with enough seniority, to close the actual gap. Bateleur was built as a direct answer to that gap — not a Western advisory model relocated to African markets, but a practice designed from the ground up around embedded seniority, measurable accountability, and an unapologetic refusal to hand work down to junior teams. The name itself is deliberate: the bateleur eagle is known across southern Africa for its distinctive, tumbling flight and its unmistakable presence in the sky — a fitting image for a firm built on visibility, accountability, and staying the course until the work is actually done.

Context Is Not a Caveat — It's the Method

It has become fashionable to say that Africa needs "context-sensitive" versions of global frameworks. In practice, that usually means the same Western playbook with a foreword added about Ubuntu. We take a different view: the operating conditions across our primary sectors are different enough that they change what actually needs to happen first, not just how it's communicated. A bank navigating Basel-aligned capital requirements while serving a large unbanked population faces a fundamentally different execution problem than a European retail bank digitising an already-mature branch network. A mining house managing a modernisation agenda alongside community and environmental licensing pressure is solving a different sequencing puzzle than a pure operational-efficiency programme. A government department or SOE trying to improve service delivery inside procurement and governance constraints that a private company will never encounter needs a partner who has actually worked inside those constraints, not around them in theory. This is why our practitioners are chosen for direct sector experience, not general management competence applied broadly. Rebatho has sat inside telecoms and public-sector technology transformations. Isiah has lived through JSE listing requirements and IFRS compliance from the inside. Takudzwa has led JSE-listed businesses through acquisition and digital-first pivots. Robert has run technology and analytics transformations across multiple African markets simultaneously. None of that is transferable competence dressed up as sector expertise — it is the specific, hard-won knowledge of what actually breaks first in each of these environments, and what sequencing gets you through it intact.

Why We Only Send Senior Practitioners

There is a well-worn model in professional services: a partner sells the engagement, and a team of juniors delivers it. It works well enough for producing reports. It works badly for producing outcomes, because the person with the pattern recognition to spot a stalling initiative early is rarely the person actually sitting in the room week to week. We've built Bateleur to refuse that trade-off entirely. Every partner who leads an engagement has already carried the accountability we're now asking them to bring to your organisation — as a group CIO, a listed-company CEO, a CFO who has taken a business through an IFRS overhaul or a JSE listing, or a managing partner who has run technology transformations across multiple African markets. That is a deliberate and expensive choice. Senior practitioners cost more per hour than graduate consultants, and there are fewer of them to go around, which is exactly why most firms don't structure themselves this way at scale. We structure ourselves this way because the judgement required to know which of twelve competing priorities actually deserves the next ninety days of organisational attention isn't something you can staff down. It comes from having made that call before, under real pressure, with your own name attached to the outcome. Clients notice the difference immediately — not in the polish of a slide deck, but in the quality of the pushback they get in the first working session, and in how quickly a stalled initiative gets correctly diagnosed rather than politely managed. That's not a nice-to-have. It's the entire reason the model exists.

Work With Bateleur

Every engagement is led by senior practitioners. No juniors. No delegation. Senior-level partnership throughout.
