SERVICE 01

What to Expect from Bateleur Consulting

If you're bringing us in on the consulting side, here is what that actually looks like in practice. You will not receive a lengthy report followed by a handshake and a good-luck wave — you will get a senior practitioner, embedded inside your organisation, who takes personal and visible ownership of a specific, agreed set of outcomes and stays until those outcomes are delivered. Expect the first phase of any engagement to be diagnostic rather than prescriptive: before we propose a single new initiative, we spend real time establishing exactly where your current strategy is stuck and why, because the fix only works if the diagnosis is right. From there, expect a scoped, milestone-based engagement rather than an open-ended retainer — you'll know upfront what we're accountable for, how long it should take, and what "done" looks like. Expect direct, sometimes uncomfortable pushback in the first working sessions, because a fractional partner who only tells you what you want to hear isn't earning their seat at the table. Expect to see us in the rooms where decisions actually get made — leadership meetings, steering committees, board sub-committees where relevant — not just in scheduled check-ins. What you should not expect is a generic playbook lifted from a global template and lightly localised. Our practitioners have run these exact functions — as CIOs, CFOs, CEOs, and managing partners — inside African organisations, under African operating conditions, and that's the judgement you're actually paying for. And every engagement sits under the Bateleur Guarantee: if we don't deliver against what we agreed, our success fee isn't earned. That's not a marketing line — it's the actual commercial structure of how we work.

OFFERING 1
Strategy Execution

We take an existing strategy — however clear or unclear — and build the execution engine underneath it: sequencing, accountability, and momentum, tracked to measurable outcomes.

OFFERING 2
Fractional Executive

A fractional CEO, COO, or CMO placed directly inside your leadership team — senior accountability for outcomes, without the full-time C-suite cost.

Why We Only Send Senior Practitioners

There is a well-worn model in professional services: a partner sells the engagement, and a team of juniors delivers it. It works well enough for producing reports. It works badly for producing outcomes, because the person with the pattern recognition to spot a stalling initiative early is rarely the person actually sitting in the room week to week. We've built Bateleur to refuse that trade-off entirely. Every partner who leads an engagement has already carried the accountability we're now asking them to bring to your organisation — as a group CIO, a listed-company CEO, a CFO who has taken a business through an IFRS overhaul or a JSE listing, or a managing partner who has run technology transformations across multiple African markets. That is a deliberate and expensive choice. Senior practitioners cost more per hour than graduate consultants, and there are fewer of them to go around, which is exactly why most firms don't structure themselves this way at scale. We structure ourselves this way because the judgement required to know which of twelve competing priorities actually deserves the next ninety days of organisational attention isn't something you can staff down. It comes from having made that call before, under real pressure, with your own name attached to the outcome. Clients notice the difference immediately — not in the polish of a slide deck, but in the quality of the pushback they get in the first working session, and in how quickly a stalled initiative gets correctly diagnosed rather than politely managed. That's not a nice-to-have. It's the entire reason the model exists.

Why Strategies Stall — What We Look For First

Every stalled strategy looks unique from the inside and remarkably similar from the outside. Before we design an engagement, we're listening for a handful of recurring patterns: priorities that were never actually ranked against each other, so everything is technically "important" and nothing gets finished; ownership that sits with a committee rather than a named individual, which quietly guarantees that when something goes wrong, no one is accountable for fixing it; incentive structures that reward activity — the meeting was held, the report was submitted — rather than the outcome the activity was supposed to produce; and information that moves too slowly from the frontline to the people with the authority to redirect resources, so problems get discovered months after they were fixable. We don't publish the full diagnostic we use to work through this with a client — it's the product of a great deal of trial and error across very different organisations, and it earns its keep precisely because it isn't a generic checklist anyone can download. What we can say is that the first thing any engagement produces isn't a new plan. It's an honest, evidence-based picture of exactly where the current one is actually stuck, and why — because you cannot sequence a fix for a problem you haven't correctly diagnosed. Most of the value in the first month of an engagement comes from that diagnostic clarity alone, before a single new initiative is even proposed.

Fractional Executive, Interim Manager, or Consultant

What's the Difference?

Clients evaluating us for the first time often ask how a fractional executive engagement differs from hiring an interim manager or bringing in a traditional consulting team, and it's a fair question because the lines have blurred in the market. An interim manager typically fills a vacant seat on a full-time basis for a fixed period — usually while you recruit a permanent replacement. They are focused on keeping the seat functional, not necessarily on closing a specific strategic gap. A traditional consultant, even a very good one, is usually engaged to analyse and recommend; the deliverable is a plan, a model, or a report, and implementation is handed back to your existing team. Neither model is wrong — they simply solve different problems.

A fractional executive at Bateleur sits between those two models and borrows the best of each. Like an interim manager, they carry real, named accountability inside your organisation — not an advisory relationship at arm's length. Like a consultant, they are engaged part-time and for a defined scope, so you are not committing to a full-time salary and benefits package for a role you may only need for a season.

Unlike either, the engagement is explicitly outcome-guaranteed: if the agreed metrics aren't met, our success fee isn't earned. That combination — senior accountability, flexible commitment, and skin in the game — is what the fractional model is actually built to offer, and it's why it tends to fit organisations in a specific kind of transitional moment rather than being a universal substitute for permanent leadership.
