Coaching for Africa's most ambitious leaders — delivered one-to-one, in groups, or at senior executive level, grounded in reflection, realignment, and sustained change.
Coaching for Africa's most ambitious leaders — delivered one-to-one, in groups, or at senior executive level, grounded in reflection, realignment, and sustained change.
Coaching at Bateleur is built for people who don't have time to waste on conversations that feel good and change nothing. Here's what to expect if you engage us. Every relationship starts by establishing a clear baseline and a concrete definition of what "different" will look like by the end of the engagement — a specific decision pattern, a specific team dynamic, a specific capability — so that neither you nor your coach is working toward a vague sense of self-improvement. If we can't name what we're measuring, we won't start the clock. Expect a coach who has actually operated at senior level themselves, not a generalist practitioner working from a certification and a framework binder. That means expect direct, sometimes unwelcome observations delivered with respect but without softening — our job is to tell you the thing your team is too polite or too junior to say to your face, not to make you feel good about a pattern that isn't serving you. Expect structure: defined phases, defined check-in points, and a defined endpoint, rather than an open-ended series of pleasant monthly conversations. Expect the engagement to be scoped to you specifically — whether you're an individual executive, an intact leadership team, or a rising leader being prepared for a bigger seat — rather than a one-size programme applied regardless of context. And expect accountability on our side too: our coaching sits under the same guarantee philosophy as our consulting work. If the shift we agreed to work toward doesn't materialise, that's a result we take seriously, not a line item we quietly close out.
One-to-one coaching for leaders navigating growth, transition, or complexity. Structured around reflection, realignment, and reinforced habits that sustain change.

There's a reasonable scepticism among senior executives about coaching, usually earned from a bad prior experience: a well-meaning coach with a generic toolkit, a series of pleasant conversations that felt good in the room and changed nothing afterwards, or a programme built for individual contributors that was never designed for the specific pressures of sitting at board level. Executive coaching, done properly, is a different discipline entirely. It sits closer to high-performance sport than to therapy or mentorship — the goal isn't insight for its own sake, it's insight that gets converted into a measurably different pattern of decisions within a defined window. That requires a coach who has actually operated at a senior level themselves, who can tell the difference between a genuine blind spot and a defensible judgement call, and who is willing to say the uncomfortable thing rather than the affirming one, because affirmation is cheap and rarely what changes an executive's trajectory. It also requires structure. Coaching without a clear starting baseline and a defined endpoint tends to drift into pleasant but directionless conversation. Every Bateleur coaching engagement begins by establishing exactly what's being measured and what "different" will concretely look like by the end of the engagement — a specific decision pattern, a specific relationship, a specific capability — so that both the client and the coach are accountable to something more rigorous than "it felt useful." That's the standard we hold ourselves to, and it's the reason our coaching clients tend to be repeat clients rather than one-off engagements.

Coaching is one of the harder line items for a CFO or a board to evaluate, because the outcomes are frequently behavioural rather than financial — a leader who now delegates instead of bottlenecking every decision, a team that resolves conflict in the room instead of in the corridor afterwards, an executive who no longer needs to be personally present for every client relationship to hold. Those outcomes matter enormously to the business, but they don't show up neatly on a single line of a P&L. Our approach is to name the measurable proxy for that change before the engagement begins, not after. If the goal is reduced executive bottlenecking, we can track decision turnaround time or the number of decisions still requiring the executive's direct sign-off. If the goal is stronger team cohesion, we can track project delivery timelines or staff retention in the affected team. If the goal is external presence and influence, we can track speaking invitations, board approaches, or media requests. The point isn't to reduce coaching to a spreadsheet — it's to ensure that six months in, there is a concrete, agreed answer to the question "did this actually work," rather than a general sense of goodwill. This is also why our coaching engagements sit under the same guarantee philosophy as our consulting work. We are not interested in a coaching relationship that feels supportive but produces no measurable shift in how a leader or a team actually operates day to day. If that shift doesn't materialise against what we agreed at the outset, that is a result we take seriously — not a footnote.
Every engagement is scoped with documented, measurable outcomes. If we fail to deliver against those commitments, we refund our fee. No exceptions. No small print.
